The Philippine native goats are small, stocky and low set but are adapted to local conditions, reach sexual maturity earlier, have higher fertility, shorter kidding interval, good mothering ability, and are capable of multiple births. These traits make the native does outstanding over their counterparts. The native goats are believed to be have originated from the Indo-Malay Katjang breed.
The usual colors and markings are red, white or black, or a combination of these colors. Their mature weight is approximately 20 kilograms.
They're milk production ability is low at 0.3 kilograms per day, average. They also have short lactation days at about 187.
Puberty is reached early by these Native goats. The onset of estrus among native weanlings are observed as early as five months while purebreds only manifest sexual maturity when they are 6-7 months old. However, breeding is not recommended at this early age as this could case problems like stunted growth for the does, which in turn produced weak and light-weight kids.
The native goat are prolific breeders with shorter kidding intervals compared to purebred goats.
